Rex Heuermann Faces Major Announcement in Serial Murder Investigation
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney is set to make a significant announcement in the ongoing investigation of the suspected serial murders of several women near Long Island’s Gilgo Beach. This announcement comes as the prime suspect in some of these killings, Rex Heuermann, is due in court on Tuesday.

Heuermann was charged in July with the murders of three women: Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. Their bodies were discovered buried along a remote beach parkway. Prosecutors have also linked Heuermann to the disappearance and suspected killing of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who vanished in 2007.
The arrest of Heuermann, a 60-year-old architect, marks a significant breakthrough in a case that had long stumped investigators. Over a decade ago, police searching for a missing woman stumbled upon ten sets of human remains hidden in the thick underbrush near Gilgo Beach. These killings attracted immense public attention and even inspired the 2020 Netflix film “Lost Girls.” While authorities suspect a serial killer committed some of the slayings, they do not believe all the victims were killed by the same person. Most of the killings remain unsolved.
Heuermann first became a suspect in 2022 when detectives connected him to a pickup truck seen by a witness during one of the victims’ disappearances. The following year, DNA recovered from a discarded pizza crust in a Manhattan trash can was matched to a hair found on a restraint used in the killings, further implicating Heuermann in the crimes.
Before his arrest, Heuermann worked as a licensed architect for a Manhattan-based firm and resided in Massapequa Park, a suburb near where the victims’ bodies were found. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has been held without bail at Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead.
