Rex Heuermann Due in Court for Suspected Serial Murders of Women Found in Long Island
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – In a major development in the investigation of the suspected serial murders of several women whose bodies were discovered along a coastal highway near Long Island’s Gilgo Beach, prosecutors are preparing to make a significant announcement. The prime suspect in some of these killings, Rex Heuermann, is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. Heuermann was previously charged with the deaths of three women and prosecutors have indicated that they are working to charge him with a fourth slaying.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney will make the announcement following a court hearing in Riverhead, New York. Heuermann, a 60-year-old architect, was arrested in July for the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, whose bodies were found buried along a remote beach parkway. Additionally, Heuermann is suspected in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who went missing in 2007.

Despite pleading not guilty, Heuermann has been held without bail at Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead. His arrest came more than a decade after police searching for a missing woman discovered 10 sets of human remains concealed in thick underbrush near Gilgo Beach. The unsolved killings have captivated the public’s attention and even inspired the 2020 Netflix film “Lost Girls.” While authorities believe that some of the slayings were committed by a serial killer, they do not believe that all the victims were killed by the same person.
Heuermann first became a suspect in 2022 when detectives connected him to a pickup truck that a witness reported seeing around the time one of the victims disappeared. The following year, detectives trailing Heuermann obtained his DNA from a discarded pizza crust found in a Manhattan trash can. They matched it to a hair found on a restraint used in the killings.
As a licensed architect working in Manhattan, Heuermann lived in Massapequa Park, a suburb near where the bodies were discovered. The upcoming court hearing is expected to shed further light on the investigation and the evidence against Heuermann. The families of the victims, as well as the community at large, eagerly await justice for the lives lost to this heinous string of crimes..
