Parents Advocate for More Preventative Measures and Transparency Following School Shooting
Several parents in Perry, Iowa, have expressed their concerns and demands for increased safety measures and transparency from school officials in the wake of a deadly school shooting earlier this month. During a recent Perry school board meeting, parents voiced their frustrations and called for immediate action.

Grace Castro, one of the parents, criticized the school district’s policies and claimed that “lives were lost due to our lack of preventative measures.” She suggested the installation of metal detectors at school entrances, a temporary remote learning option, and the enforcement of a clear-bag policy as the bare minimum steps that should be taken to ensure the safety of students.
These sentiments were echoed by other parents, including some of the victims’ families, who have been expressing their concerns on the Perry Facebook page since the district announced its reopening plan last week. Mark Drahos, another parent, acknowledged that it is impossible to please everyone but urged the board to consider implementing measures such as a single-point entry system, a no-bag policy, and additional security personnel like hall monitors.
The tragic incident, which took place on the students’ first day back from winter break, started in the shared middle and high school cafeteria. The attack was contained to the north end of the joint building, resulting in the death of 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff and the injury of seven others, including Principal Dan Marburger. Marburger, who showed immense bravery in trying to protect his students, sadly succumbed to his injuries.
The community is mourning the loss of Principal Marburger, and his body will be escorted back to Perry from Des Moines, where he had been hospitalized. Funeral services are currently pending, and the governor of Iowa, Kim Reynolds, has ordered all flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Marburger until the day of his funeral and interment.

School District Puts Reopening Plan on Hold
In light of the parent concerns and Marburger’s passing, the school district has decided to pause its reopening plan. School officials are now seeking guidance from law enforcement and safety experts to ensure that appropriate measures are put in place. Uniformed officers will be present on-site as students transition back to school, and counseling services will continue to be offered to support the affected students.
It is worth noting that the last injured student has been released from the hospital, bringing some relief to the community. However, the trauma caused by the incident is still being felt, and it is crucial for the district to address the safety and security concerns of the parents and implement comprehensive preventative measures.
A Call for Understanding and Review
Ahmir Jolliff’s mother, Erica Jolliff, made a heartfelt plea at the school board meeting, asking that the shooter be referred to by his name, Dylan, rather than being labeled as a school shooter or a murderer. She believes that treating him as a person and addressing any potential bullying or harassment he may have faced could have potentially prevented the tragic events of January 4. Erica also called on the school district to conduct a thorough review of the incident and develop safety procedures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
