Parents Call for Increased Safety Measures and Transparency in Iowa School Shooting Aftermath
Several parents in an Iowa town where a tragic school shooting occurred earlier this month are demanding more preventative measures and transparency from school officials as they prepare for students’ return. During a recent Perry school board meeting, parents expressed their concerns following the death of Principal Dan Marburger, who was critically injured in the shooting.

One parent, Grace Castro, criticized the school district’s policies, stating that “lives were lost due to our lack of preventative measures.” She suggested the installation of metal detectors at school entrances, a temporary remote learning option, and the enforcement of a clear-bag policy as the absolute minimum actions that should be taken.
These sentiments were echoed by other parents, including some of the victims’ families, who have also voiced their concerns on the Perry Facebook page since the district announced its reopening plan.
Mark Drahos, another parent, called for additional preventative measures while acknowledging that it may be impossible to please everyone. He proposed ideas such as implementing a single-point entry system, a no-bag policy, and increased security measures like hiring hall monitors.
Joseph Swanson emphasized the need for an enhancement of security measures and mental health support, acknowledging that finding a solution to this problem is not easy.

The Perry community is mourning the loss of Principal Marburger, who bravely put himself in harm’s way to protect students during the shooting. His funeral arrangements are pending, and his body will be escorted back to Perry from Des Moines, where he had been hospitalized.
Meanwhile, the district’s reopening plan has been put on hold due to both parent concerns and Marburger’s death. School officials are seeking input from law enforcement and safety experts to ensure the implementation of effective measures. Uniformed officers will be present on site as students return to school, and counseling services are being offered to support the students.
As the community heals, it is worth noting that the suspect, 17-year-old Dylan Butler, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities discovered a pump-action shotgun, a small-caliber handgun, and an improvised explosive device in his belongings.
In the midst of this tragedy, Ahmir Jolliff’s mother, Erica Jolliff, urged the community to remember that Dylan Butler had a name and should not be referred to solely as a school shooter or a murderer. She called for a comprehensive review of the events leading up to the shooting and the development of safety procedures to prevent future tragedies.
The Perry community continues to come together, offering condolences to both the victims’ families and Butler’s family. It is a time for reflection and a renewed commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students..
