Parents Demand Increased Safety Measures and Transparency Following Deadly School Shooting in Iowa Town
Several concerned parents in an Iowa town where a deadly school shooting occurred earlier this month have expressed their desire for more preventative measures and transparency from school officials. During a Perry school board meeting held on Monday, the day after the tragic passing of Principal Dan Marburger, who was critically injured in the shooting, parents voiced their concerns and suggestions.
One parent, Grace Castro, criticized the school district’s policies and emphasized the need for additional security measures. She recommended the installation of metal detectors at school entrances, a temporary remote learning option, and the enforcement of a clear-bag policy. Castro stated that these measures were the absolute minimum that the school could do to ensure the safety of the students.

Mark Drahos also expressed the need for more preventative measures but acknowledged the difficulty of satisfying everyone’s concerns. He discussed ideas with a school board member, including implementing a single-point entry to buildings, enforcing a no-bag policy, and increasing security with the presence of hall monitors.
Joseph Swanson emphasized the importance of addressing both security measures and mental health well-being. He acknowledged that finding a solution to this problem is not easy, but enhancements in these areas are necessary.
The Perry school district had initially announced its reopening plan last week, which prompted parents, including some of the victims’ families, to express their concerns on the district’s Facebook page. The meeting, originally scheduled for Sunday, was postponed due to the passing of Principal Marburger.
The tragic shooting took place in the shared middle and high school cafeteria, where students were having breakfast on their first day back from winter break. The incident resulted in the death of 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff and left seven others injured, including Principal Marburger and other school staff members.

In response to the community’s concerns, the school district has put its reopening plan on hold. They are seeking guidance from law enforcement and safety experts and plan to have uniformed officers on-site as students return to school. Counseling services are also being provided to support students and staff.
The district’s normal schedule is gradually resuming, with middle and high school students’ extracurricular competitions set to resume on Tuesday. All injured students, except for Principal Marburger, have been released from the hospital and have returned home to Perry.
The 17-year-old perpetrator of the shooting died from a self-inflicted gunshot. Authorities discovered a pump-action shotgun, a small-caliber handgun, and a homemade explosive device among his belongings.
As the community mourns the loss of Principal Marburger, his body will be escorted back to Perry on Tuesday, with funeral services pending. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in his honor until the day of his funeral and interment.
In the aftermath of this tragic incident, parents and community members are urging the school district to conduct a thorough review of the events and implement comprehensive safety procedures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
