Parents Demand More Preventative Measures and Transparency in Iowa School Shooting Aftermath
Several concerned parents in an Iowa town where a tragic school shooting occurred earlier this month have called for increased preventative measures and transparency from school officials. During a Perry school board meeting on Monday, parents expressed their concerns following the death of Principal Dan Marburger, who had been critically injured in the shooting.
One parent, Grace Castro, criticized the school district’s policies and emphasized the need for preventative measures. She suggested the installation of metal detectors at school entrances, a temporary remote learning option, and a clear-bag policy as the absolute minimum steps that should be taken.

Another parent, Mark Drahos, also called for additional preventative measures. However, he acknowledged that it may be impossible to please everyone and discussed potential solutions with a school board member. These solutions included implementing a single-point entry system, enforcing a no-bag policy, and increasing security measures such as having hall monitors.
Joseph Swanson expressed his understanding that there is no easy fix to such a complex problem. Nonetheless, he emphasized the importance of enhancing security measures and prioritizing mental health well-being.
The meeting had been postponed from Sunday due to the untimely death of Principal Marburger. His body will be returned to Perry on Tuesday, with his family encouraging community members to line the route and welcome him back home. Funeral services are currently pending.
The school shooting took place in the Perry High School cafeteria, where students were having breakfast on their first day back from winter break. The shooting was contained to the north end of the school, resulting in the tragic death of sixth-grader Ahmir Jolliff, as well as the injury of seven others, including Marburger and several students and staff members.

Principal Marburger was hailed as a hero by the Iowa Department of Public Safety for selflessly putting himself in harm’s way to protect his students. In honor of his bravery, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds ordered all flags to be lowered to half-staff until the day of his funeral and interment.
The district’s reopening plan is currently on hold as school officials seek advice from law enforcement and safety experts. Uniformed officers will be present on-site as students transition back to school, and counseling services will continue to be offered. Middle and high school students’ extracurricular competitions are set to resume on Tuesday.
The last injured student was released from the hospital on Sunday, meaning that all those injured in the shooting, except for Principal Marburger, have now been able to return home. The 17-year-old shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and authorities discovered a pump-action shotgun, a small-caliber handgun, and a rudimentary explosive device among his belongings.
In a heartfelt message read aloud at the school board meeting, Ahmir Jolliff’s mother, Erica Jolliff, requested that the shooter, Dylan Butler, not be labeled as a school shooter or murderer. She called for a comprehensive review of the events and the development of safety procedures to prevent future tragedies.
