Iowa Parents Demand Increased Safety Measures Following Deadly School Shooting

Several concerned parents in Perry, Iowa, have expressed their desire for enhanced preventative measures and increased transparency from school officials in the wake of a tragic school shooting that occurred earlier this month. The parents voiced their concerns during a recent Perry school board meeting, held just one day after the passing of Principal Dan Marburger, who had been critically injured in the shooting.

Grace Castro, one of the parents in attendance, criticized the school district’s current policies, stating that “lives were lost due to our lack of preventative measures.” Castro suggested the installation of metal detectors at school entrances, the implementation of a temporary remote learning option, and the enforcement of a clear-bag policy as the “absolute minimum” that the school can do to enhance safety.

Mark Drahos also called for additional preventative measures, acknowledging that it may be impossible to please everyone. Drahos revealed that he had discussed ideas with a school board member, including the implementation of a single-point entry system, a no-bag policy, and the presence of additional security personnel such as hall monitors.

Joseph Swanson stressed the importance of addressing security measures and mental health well-being, acknowledging that finding a solution to such a complex problem may not be easy. Swanson emphasized the need for an enhancement of security measures and mental health support.

The Perry school board meeting, originally scheduled for Sunday, was postponed due to Marburger’s passing. Marburger’s body will be returned to Perry on Tuesday, with his family encouraging community members to line the route in a show of support. Funeral services are currently pending.

The school shooting took place in the Perry High School cafeteria, where students were having breakfast on their first day back from winter break. The shooting quickly moved outside the cafeteria but remained contained to the north end of the school. Tragically, sixth-grader Ahmir Jolliff lost his life, and seven others, including Marburger and several students and staff members, were injured.

Marburger has been hailed as a hero by the Iowa Department of Public Safety for his selfless actions in protecting his students. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Marburger until the day of his funeral and interment.

The reopening of the Perry school district is currently on hold, as school officials seek guidance from law enforcement and safety experts. Uniformed officers will be present on-site as students gradually return to school, and counseling services will continue to be offered. Extracurricular competitions for middle and high school students are set to resume on Tuesday.

With the release of the last injured student from the hospital on Sunday, all victims of the shooting, except for Marburger, have been able to return home. The 17-year-old shooter, identified as Dylan Butler, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities discovered a pump-action shotgun, a small-caliber handgun, and a rudimentary improvised explosive device among Butler’s belongings.

At the school board meeting, Ahmir Jolliff’s mother, Erica Jolliff, requested that Butler not be referred to as a school shooter or a murderer. She urged the school district to thoroughly review the events leading up to the shooting and develop safety procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
