Parents in an Iowa town are demanding increased preventative measures and transparency from school officials following a deadly school shooting earlier this month. During a Perry school board meeting, several parents expressed their concerns and called for action in light of the tragic incident.
Grace Castro criticized the school district’s policies and emphasized the need for preventative measures. She suggested the installation of metal detectors at school entrances, a temporary remote learning option, and the enforcement of a clear-bag policy. Castro stated that these measures are the absolute minimum that can be done to enhance student safety.

Mark Drahos also voiced his concerns and acknowledged the challenges faced by school officials in meeting everyone’s expectations. He proposed ideas such as implementing a single-point entry system, a no-bag policy, and additional security measures like hall monitors.
Joseph Swanson highlighted the importance of addressing security measures and mental health well-being in order to prevent similar incidents in the future. Swanson recognized that finding a solution to this problem is not easy, but emphasized the need for enhancements in these areas.
The Perry school board meeting had been postponed from Sunday due to the death of Principal Dan Marburger, who was critically injured in the shooting. Marburger’s body will be escorted back to Perry from Des Moines, and funeral services are pending.
The attack occurred in the school cafeteria and resulted in the death of sixth-grader Ahmir Jolliff, while seven others, including Marburger, were wounded. The Iowa Department of Public Safety recognized Marburger’s selfless act of protecting his students and ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in his honor.

In response to the parent concerns and Marburger’s death, the district’s reopening plan has been put on hold. School officials are consulting law enforcement and safety experts to ensure student safety. While the injured students have been released from the hospital, except for Marburger, the community has also extended condolences to the family of the 17-year-old suspect who died from a self-inflicted gunshot. Ahmir Jolliff’s mother, Erica Jolliff, called for a thorough review of the events and the implementation of safety procedures in order to prevent future tragedies.
