Parents Demand More Preventative Measures and Transparency in Iowa School Shooting Aftermath
Several concerned parents in an Iowa town are demanding increased preventative measures and transparency from school officials following a deadly school shooting earlier this month. The parents expressed their concerns during a Perry school board meeting, which took place the day after the tragic death of Principal Dan Marburger, who was critically injured in the shooting.
One parent, Grace Castro, criticized the school district’s policies and called for the installation of metal detectors at school entrances, a temporary remote learning option, and enforcement of a clear-bag policy. She emphasized that these measures are the bare minimum that should be implemented to ensure the safety of students.

Another parent, Mark Drahos, also voiced his concerns and suggested ideas such as a single-point entry system, a no-bag policy, and additional security measures like hall monitors. However, he acknowledged that it may not be possible to please everyone with the proposed measures.
Joseph Swanson echoed the sentiments of the other parents, emphasizing the need for an enhancement of security measures and mental health support in schools. He acknowledged that finding a solution to such a complex issue is not easy, but stressed the importance of addressing these issues.
The school board meeting, originally scheduled for Sunday, was postponed due to Principal Marburger’s passing. His body will be escorted back to Perry on Tuesday, and funeral services are pending. Marburger was hailed as a hero by the Iowa Department of Public Safety, which stated that he had selflessly put himself in harm’s way to protect his students.
The school district’s reopening plan has been put on hold until further notice, as school officials seek input from law enforcement and safety experts. The district plans to have uniformed officers on site as students transition back to school, and counseling services continue to be offered. Extracurricular competitions for middle and high school students will resume on Tuesday.

The tragic incident began in the Perry High School cafeteria, where students were having breakfast on their first day back from winter break. The shooting, carried out by a 17-year-old student named Dylan Butler, resulted in the death of sixth-grader Ahmir Jolliff and the injury of seven others, including Principal Marburger. Butler died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.
Ahmir Jolliff’s mother, Erica Jolliff, addressed the school board meeting and urged the district to review the events leading up to the shooting. She asked that Butler be referred to by his name, emphasizing the importance of treating him as a person and not labeling him. She called for comprehensive safety procedures to prevent future incidents from occurring.
