New Footage Reveals Immediate Aftermath of Arizona Hot Air Balloon Crash
Newly released footage unveils the devastating aftermath of the hot air balloon crash that occurred in Arizona, claiming the lives of four passengers and leaving another critically injured. The incident took place in a rural area, situated approximately five miles north of the city of Eloy, just before 8 am on Sunday.

Aerial video captured the horrifying scene, showcasing a massive blaze that erupted at the crash site. The fire produced a thick plume of dark smoke, billowing into the sky, as firefighters rushed to extinguish the flames. Armed with hoses, they valiantly battled the inferno, dampening the charred earth beneath their boots.
According to Mayor Micah Powell, a total of thirteen individuals were onboard the ill-fated balloon. Among them were eight skydivers, four passengers, and a pilot. The skydivers had disembarked from the aircraft prior to the incident as part of a planned skydiving event. They had intended to touch down safely at the nearby Eloy Municipal Airport.
Eloy Police Chief Byron Gwaltney expressed his relief that the skydivers managed to exit the balloon unharmed before it plummeted to the ground. He described the incident as an “absolute tragedy” for the community and all those involved.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has commenced an investigation into the crash. Preliminary information provided by the NTSB indicates that the balloon experienced an unspecified problem with its envelope, leading to its descent and subsequent collision.

As the community grieves the loss of four lives, the victims have been identified as Kaitlynn “Katie” Bartrom, a 28-year-old registered nurse from Indiana, Cornelius Van Der Walt, a 37-year-old pilot from South Africa, Atahan Kiliccote, a 24-year-old graduate of Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Engineering, and Chayton Wiescholek, a 28-year-old from Union City, Michigan.
Kiliccote’s girlfriend, Kinsey, was among the skydivers who jumped from the balloon moments before the tragic crash. Wiescholek was the last person to contact his girlfriend, sending her a heartbreaking text message before the incident occurred.
The sole survivor of the crash, Valerie Stutterheim, a 23-year-old Scottsdale native, remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
