Prosecutors are set to make a major announcement in the ongoing investigation into the suspected serial murders of a group of women whose bodies were discovered along a coastal highway near Gilgo Beach in Long Island. The prime suspect in some of these killings, Rex Heuermann, is due to appear in court on Tuesday, following his previous charges in connection with the deaths of three women.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney will reveal the details of this announcement after a court hearing in Riverhead, New York. Heuermann, who is a 60-year-old architect, was charged in July with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. Their bodies were found buried along a remote beach parkway. Prosecutors believe Heuermann is also responsible for the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who went missing in 2007.

Despite his arrest, Heuermann has maintained his innocence and has been kept in custody without bail at Suffolk County Jail. The arrest of Heuermann comes over a decade after the discovery of 10 sets of human remains near Gilgo Beach, which had baffled investigators for years. The case garnered significant public attention and even inspired the 2020 Netflix film “Lost Girls.”
Authorities suspect that a serial killer is responsible for some of the killings, but they do not believe all the victims were murdered by the same person. The majority of the cases remain unsolved. Heuermann first became a suspect in 2022 when detectives linked him to a pickup truck seen by a witness during one of the victims’ disappearances. The following year, police collected Heuermann’s DNA from a discarded pizza crust and matched it to a hair found on a restraint used in the killings.
Heuermann had been working as a licensed architect for a Manhattan-based firm and resided in Massapequa Park, a suburb near where the bodies were discovered. The upcoming announcement by prosecutors could potentially shed more light on these disturbing crimes and provide closure to the families of the victims..
