Remembering Jelani Day: A Mother’s Mission to Help Families of Missing Minorities

Nearly 2 1/2 years have passed since the tragic disappearance and death of Jelani Day, a promising graduate from Danville High School in 2014. His mother, Carmen Bolden Day, has since dedicated herself to a noble mission: providing resources and support to families of missing minorities. Jelani was just starting a graduate program at Illinois State University when he went missing in August 2021. On September 4th, a body was discovered along the Illinois River in Peru, later identified as Jelani Day on September 23rd.

Carmen Bolden Day recently appeared on D102’s The Big Show with Tommy B, where she shared her plans for the Second Annual All White Remembrance Dinner, organized by The Jelani Day Foundation. This event aims to raise funds to sustain her mission and continue supporting families in need.

In an interview, Carmen passionately expressed her desire to assist others, saying, “I want to give them just what I have; the things I’ve learned along this journey, the assistance and the resources that I can provide for them to help them. That’s what the foundation is based on.”

The fundraising dinner, scheduled for Saturday, February 3rd, will take place at the ISU Bone Student Center in Normal. While it promises to be an entertaining event, it also serves as a platform to raise awareness about missing minorities and provide crucial information to the attendees.

Special guests, including a legislator who played a significant role in passing the Jelani Day Bill, a state law enacted at the beginning of 2023, will be present at the event. The legislation mandates that if a body found in Illinois remains unidentified for 72 hours, the FBI must be notified.
