A devastating incident unfolded in Kota, Rajasthan, as a 12-year-old boy lost his life after his throat was slit by a dangerous glass-coated kite string. The incident, which occurred during the kite-flying festivities of Makar Sankranti, also left five others injured in the district, according to the local police.

Victim’s Tragic End

The victim, Surendra Bheel, a bright student in the fifth grade, was enjoying an evening of kite-flying with his friends on the rooftop of his house. Little did he know that this innocent pastime would result in a horrific turn of events. As Surendra was maneuvering his kite, the lethal string made of Chinese manjha, notorious for its glass coating, slashed his throat. The severity of the injury led to his immediate demise, despite prompt medical attention at a nearby hospital.

Other Casualties

Unfortunately, Surendra was not the only victim of this dangerous Chinese manjha. Five individuals, including a 60-year-old man named Ramlal Meena, suffered critical injuries due to the banned kite string during the Makar Sankranti festivities. Ramlal Meena, who was returning home on his motorcycle in Satur village, endured a deep gash to his neck, requiring 13 stitches. He is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Kota.

Authorities Take Action

Prior to the celebration of Makar Sankranti, the district collectors of Kota, Bundi, and Jhalawar had issued strict orders banning the use of glass-coated or Chinese strings. These measures were implemented to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring. However, despite the ban, the dangerous strings continued to claim victims, not only humans but also innocent birds. According to the president of an NGO dedicated to aiding injured birds, seven birds lost their lives, and 34 others sustained injuries in Kota city alone due to these sharp kite strings.
