Possible Drowning of Visitor in Hawaii Island Sparks Investigation
Hawaii Island police are currently investigating a potential drowning incident that occurred on Saturday morning off the coast of Kau. The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Carson Philbin, a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina.

According to a statement released by authorities, Kau District patrol officers promptly responded to reports of several swimmers in distress at the South Point area around 11:23 a.m. It was determined that three adult men and one woman had jumped into the ocean at the “hoist” area and encountered difficulties due to the rough ocean conditions.
Fortunately, local bystanders were quick to assist three of the four distressed swimmers, successfully bringing them back to the safety of the shore. Tragically, Philbin was swept further out into the sea, with a witness reporting that he was last seen approximately 75 yards offshore before disappearing beneath the water’s surface.
The combined efforts of local fishermen and the Hawaii Fire Department ultimately led to the recovery of Philbin’s body. He was immediately transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where medical professionals later pronounced him dead.
To determine the exact cause of death, an autopsy has been ordered, and the investigation into this unfortunate incident is currently ongoing. The Hawaii Police Department urges anyone who may have any information regarding this incident to come forward and contact Kau Patrol officer Paul Wright III at (808) 939-2520.
