Chain-Link Fence Erected at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birth Home in Atlanta

The birth home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in northeast Atlanta is now surrounded by a chain-link fence, much to the disappointment of visitors who had hoped to visit the historic site. Charles Stewart, a visitor who came to see the birth home, expressed his frustration at the sudden closure, stating, “We heard it was shut down. And when we got here, we saw the fence. So it was an injustice for us.”

The closure of the home comes after a disturbing incident in December, where a woman identified as Laneisha Henderson was caught on video dousing the MLK birth home with gasoline. Fortunately, a passerby intervened and two retired NYPD officers detained Henderson until the arrival of APD officers. Henderson now faces charges of arson.

Martin Luther King III, the son of the civil rights icon, spoke about the incident, acknowledging the potential tragedy that was averted. He praised the individuals who were able to prevent further damage to the birth home.

Marty Smith, a representative from the National Park Service, explained that the fence was erected as part of ongoing renovations and preservation efforts for the historic home. Smith emphasized the importance of protecting the property while the NPS determines a permanent plan for its preservation.

To address concerns and gather input from the public, two public meetings have been scheduled for January 30 and January 31. These meetings aim to discuss strategies for better preservation and protection of the birth home, ensuring that future generations will have the opportunity to appreciate its historical significance.
