The local law enforcement was quick to respond to the alarming situation. A Libby Police Officer located the vehicle near the intersection of Highway 2 and attempted to stop Covey, but he refused to comply and continued to drag the vehicle east on the highway. This led to a slow-speed pursuit through town, during which Covey collided with a pickup truck equipped with a plow.

The pursuit was eventually terminated due to the dangerous speeds and road conditions. Caleb Covey was identified as the suspect, and officers and deputies returned to Libby to assess the damage caused and provide assistance to those in need. However, the situation took another turn when Covey was reported to be returning to town.

The pursuit recommenced, and during the course of it, Covey crashed into another motorist’s vehicle before heading west on US Highway 2 towards Troy. While the Libby Police Officers discontinued their pursuit to maintain a presence in the town, the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office deputies continued to pursue Covey. Eventually, at approximately mile marker 4.5 on Montana Highway 56, spike strips were successfully deployed by the deputies.

Despite having deflating tires and eventually driving on rims, Covey continued south on Highway 56 before turning west on Highway 200 into Idaho. It was there that he was apprehended by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect had sustained several self-inflicted wounds, and Lincoln County deputies promptly provided lifesaving medical aid before transferring him to a responding ambulance.
