22-Year-Old Man Arrested After Lengthy Police Pursuit Following Residential Burglary
A 22-year-old man has been apprehended by police following a dramatic 17-mile chase, which resulted from his alleged involvement in a residential burglary in Waukegan. Henry M. Yates, a resident of North Chicago, now faces charges of residential burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, theft over $500, and two counts of aggravated fleeing to elude.

The Incident
The incident unfolded on Tuesday evening when two residents of Waukegan left their home to visit a nearby laundromat. Little did they know that their peaceful evening would soon turn into a nightmare.
After approximately three hours, the residents returned home, only to discover that their car was missing from the street. To their horror, upon entering their residence, they found evidence of a break-in.
A man, later identified as Yates, was spotted driving their stolen vehicle through the alleyway and parking in front of their house. Realizing the gravity of the situation, the victims promptly dialed 911 to alert the authorities.
The Police Pursuit
Upon receiving the distress call, officers swiftly located the stolen vehicle near the residence and attempted to pull it over. However, Yates had other plans. He led the police on a heart-pounding pursuit, spanning from the south end of Waukegan to Beach Park, then Zion, before eventually circling back to Waukegan.

During the chase, Yates exhibited reckless behavior by driving well above the speed limit, disregarding multiple stop signs and red lights. The pursuit finally came to an end when the stolen car reached a dead-end and could no longer continue fleeing.
The Arrest
Following the arrest, law enforcement found that Yates not only matched the description provided by the victims but also had their keys and stolen property in his possession. The stolen items, predominantly electronic devices, amounted to over $1,000.
It was also revealed that Yates was already on probation for a felony cannabis charge in Lake County and had an active warrant for a criminal trespass incident.
Legal Proceedings
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office wasted no time in filing a petition to detain Yates, citing him as a real and present danger to the community. During a detention hearing, Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak granted the petition.
Yates will now face a preliminary hearing scheduled for February 7, where further details of the case will be presented.
The residents involved in this harrowing ordeal can now breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that justice is being served. The courage they displayed in promptly reporting the incident played a vital role in ensuring the swift capture of the suspect.
