Remembering Shellby Trettel and Patrick Jeffrey Roers: Cloquet Mourns Double Homicide Victims at Super 8 Hotel | Duluth News Tribune

DULUTH — Can you believe it? We’re almost two weeks into the new year and I’m still struggling to write the correct date. I mean, baby New Year is already taking its first steps, and here I am, still stuck in 2023. Is there a grace period for this sort of thing? When do we have to fully embrace 2024 and leave 2023 behind?

I know, I know. It’s 2024, or at least that’s what Ryan Seacrest told me on TV. The calendars on my desk and computer agree. So why is it so difficult to get it right? Maybe it’s muscle memory overriding my brain’s command to my arm and hand. I’m sure some of you out there can relate. Your brain is shouting “2024!” but your arm and hand are stubbornly loyal to 2023. Will this disconnect ever go away? Will my mind and body finally sync up with the new year?

Well, I hope so, and I hope it happens before we put away the Christmas tree.

Now, let’s shift our attention to some of the news highlights from the past week in Duluth. It has been a somber time for Cloquet and the Northland community as they mourn the shocking double homicide that occurred at the Super 8 Hotel on Monday night. The victims, 22-year-old Shellby Trettel from Cloquet and 35-year-old Patrick Jeffrey Roers from Deer River, Minnesota, were tragically taken from their loved ones. The suspect, 32-year-old Nicholas Elliot Lenius from Ramsey, Minnesota, was found dead on hotel grounds from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. At this time, police have not found a connection between the three individuals.

Despite the heartbreak, the community rallied around Trettel’s loved ones during a vigil in Cloquet. Our reporter Macklin Caruso and photographer Clint Austin were there to learn more about Trettel and the people who loved her. It’s during times like these that we see the strength and support of our community shine through.

In other news, our sports reporter Reagan Hoverman delved into the importance of weight training in successful high school sports teams. It turns out that a robust weight-training regimen is often a key factor in their achievements. Hoverman spoke to several high-achieving prep programs to find out more about their approach to weight training.

Lastly, our arts and entertainment reporter Jay Gabler attended a Hoyt Lakes City Council meeting where the discussion revolved around the possibility of building a spaceport on the Iron Range. While this might seem like an unusual topic for a reporter in this field, Gabler couldn’t resist the opportunity to explore the idea. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll have a spaceport near Duluth, though hopefully without the wretched hive of scum and villainy that was depicted in “Star Wars.”
