The year began with the devastating loss of Fountain Police Officer Julian Becerra, who tragically lost his life while serving his community.

In February, Officer Becerra fell 40 feet from the S. Academy Bridge over Fountain Creek. Despite spending over a week in the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Officer Becerra, a dedicated K-9 officer assigned to the patrol division, had previously served with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. He left behind a grieving wife and two young children.

In May, the community witnessed a long-awaited moment of justice as Letecia Stauch, the stepmother of 9-year-old Gannon Stauch, was found guilty of his murder. The jury’s verdict included several counts, including first-degree murder. Letecia Stauch was sentenced to two life sentences without the possibility of parole, along with an additional 13 years. Gannon’s father, Al Stauch, expressed the heart-wrenching pain of losing his beloved son, stating, “I’ll never get to see my boy again.”
Club Q Shooter Pleads Guilty
The following month, a plea deal was reached in the devastating shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs, which claimed the lives of five individuals. The shooter pleaded guilty to multiple counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and bias motivated crimes. As a result, he received five consecutive life sentences, along with an additional 48 years behind bars.
Club Q’s Future Plans
In a significant development, the owners of Club Q announced that the club will not reopen at its previous location. Instead, a new venue called “The Q” will open at the Satellite Hotel in southeast Colorado Springs, offering a fresh start for the LGBTQ+ community.
King Soopers Reopens After Temporary Closure
June brought disappointment for a community considered a food desert when the King Soopers store at S. Academy Blvd. and Hancock Expy. temporarily closed due to the discovery of asbestos in some floor tiles. However, local food banks stepped up to support the community, and after extensive cleanup and renovations, King Soopers reopened its doors to customers in November.
