Arrest Made in Denton County Sexual Assault Investigation

A Marshall man has been taken into custody following a lengthy sexual assault investigation in Denton County. The Denton Police Department, in collaboration with the Marshall Police Department, announced the arrest of 38-year-old Jason Vann Warren. Warren is believed to be connected to two separate incidents that occurred in 2020.

According to the Denton Police Department, Warren was apprehended on Thursday on two warrants for grand jury indictment and burglary of habitation. He also had an outstanding warrant from the Waco Police Department for criminal trespass. Warren was booked into the Harrison County Jail, with his total bond amount set at $210,000, before being transferred to Denton PD.

DNA evidence played a crucial role in linking Warren to the two incidents. The first occurred on March 8, 2020, when a woman reported an attempted forced entry into her residence on Charlotte Street. The suspect fled when the victim resisted. The second incident took place on November 7, 2020, when a male suspect forced his way into a woman’s apartment on the same street and sexually assaulted her.

The Denton Police Department received notification in December 2022 that the DNA profiles from both cases were connected. Working closely with the Dallas FBI office, further DNA testing was conducted, leading to the identification of a relative of the suspect in November 2023. Through a comprehensive investigation of the suspect’s family lineage, Jason Vann Warren was identified as the prime suspect.

Although Warren currently resides in Marshall, he previously lived in Denton. In December 2023, with the assistance of the FBI and the Joint Harrison County Violent Crime and Narcotics Task Force, an additional DNA sample was obtained from Warren. The analysis of the sample concluded that Warren’s DNA could not be excluded as a contributor to the collected samples.

Warren was indicted on January 9 and is now facing charges related to the sexual assault incidents. The Denton Police Department expressed their gratitude to the FBI, the Joint Harrison County Violent Crime and Narcotics Task Force (which includes officers from the Marshall Police Department and the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office), and the Texas Department of Public Safety for their invaluable assistance in the investigation and arrest of Warren.
