65-year-old Woman Dies from Burn Injuries While Trying to Stay Warm
Rangpur, Bangladesh – In a tragic incident that highlights the desperation faced by many during the harsh winter months, a 65-year-old woman lost her life while attempting to keep warm. Amena Begum, a resident of Gopal village in the Pirgacha upazila of Rangpur, suffered burn injuries when her clothes accidentally caught fire. Despite the efforts of medical professionals at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RpMC), Begum succumbed to her injuries on Saturday afternoon.

The granddaughter of the deceased, Marufa, shared the heartbreaking details of the incident. Begum, like many others in the region, was trying to stave off the cold by igniting bonfires. However, a tragic turn of events occurred when her clothes caught fire, resulting in severe burns.
Dr. AM Akhtaruzzaman, the Director of RpMC, revealed the extent of Begum’s injuries. She was admitted to the hospital with 70% burns on her body, including her respiratory tract. The medical team at the burn unit tried their best to save her life, but unfortunately, their efforts were in vain.
This incident sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals living in colder regions without access to proper heating facilities. In Rangpur, where temperatures can drop significantly during the winter season, many resort to alternative methods to keep warm.
