Olympic Valley, Calif. – A second avalanche occurred at the Palisades Tahoe ski resort in Olympic Valley, just one day after a deadly slide claimed the life of skier Kenneth Kidd. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the second incident.
The avalanche near Wolverine Bowl on the Alpine side of the resort was reported on Thursday around 12:30 p.m. As a result, the Summit lift and the affected terrain were immediately closed as a safety precaution. The resort’s spokesperson confirmed that ski patrol conducted thorough searches using beacons, probes, and dog teams, following standard protocol.

Yesterday’s avalanche, which occurred near the iconic KT-22 lift, tragically resulted in the death of 66-year-old Kenneth Kidd, a Point Reyes resident with ties to both the Bay Area and the Tahoe region. Multiple individuals were also trapped in the avalanche but were successfully rescued.
In an effort to mitigate further avalanche risks, the ski patrol team had conducted hazard mitigation measures, including using a 105mm howitzer and performing ski-cutting through the area prior to the resort opening on Thursday.
After completing the searches and ensuring the safety of the area, the Summit lift was reopened to guests.
At this time, the cause of both avalanche incidents remains unknown. Authorities will continue to investigate the factors that contributed to these tragic events.
