By | January 12, 2024

Fundraising efforts are currently underway for the victims of the recent shooting incident in Cloquet. One of the victims, 22-year-old Shellby Trettel, received a generous donation from a group of athletes who frequently stay at the Super 8 hotel where she worked. The Anchorage Wolverines, a junior ice hockey team, had just checked out of the hotel the day before the tragedy occurred. Players from the team expressed their gratitude for the warm welcome and exceptional service they received during their stay. Kade Shea, a Wolverines hockey player, recalled Trettel’s kindness and described her as a good-hearted person. The news of her untimely death saddened him deeply.

Shea was not the only one affected by Trettel’s passing. Players, coaches, and local hockey moms associated with the Wolverines felt compelled to contribute to Trettel’s family in any way they could. This collective effort resulted in a significant donation of $1,600 to Trettel’s GoFundMe campaign. Nick Walters, the Wolverines Coach, believes that witnessing such acts of generosity in the aftermath of a tragedy can inspire his young players to not only excel in sports but also strive to be compassionate individuals within their community.

Meanwhile, the other victim, 35-year-old Patrick Roers from Deer River, also has a GoFundMe page set up to support him. The campaign has already raised over $13,000. According to Roers’ GoFundMe, he was a guest at the Super 8 and was shot while sitting in his car in the parking lot. The shooter, identified as 32-year-old Nicholas Lenius from Ramsey, also took his own life. The police are currently investigating the motive behind the shooting and whether the perpetrator had any connection to either of the victims.

The support and donations pouring in for both Trettel and Roers highlight the unity and compassion within the hockey community. It serves as a reminder that during difficult times, people come together to uplift and support one another. The lessons learned from these acts of kindness extend far beyond the realm of sports, instilling important values in young athletes and reminding us all of the power of community support.
