Maryland Republican Party Member Resigns After Capitol Riot Charges

The Maryland Republican Party has confirmed the resignation of Carlos Ayala, a member of the Maryland Board of Elections, following his arrest for his involvement in the January 6th Capitol riot. Ayala’s resignation comes as he believes that the upcoming 2024 elections process and the State Board of Elections should not be affected by distractions.

Nicole Beus Harris, the chairwoman of the state GOP, stated, “The MDGOP believes in the 1st Amendment and in the American principle that one is innocent until proven guilty.” She further emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the elections process.

Ayala’s resignation was initially reported by Maryland Matters. Video footage from the Capitol riot shows Ayala approaching a fire door while holding a flag. As the mob attempts to breach the door, an officer intervenes, blocking it with a police shield. The officer then removes a black flag from a PVC pipe flagpole. Although the CCTV video does not clearly show who threw the flagpole, it matches the one Ayala was holding moments earlier. Later in the video, Ayala can be seen without the flag or flagpole.

During the incident, Ayala was accompanied by two individuals referred to as “Witness 1” and “Witness 2.” One of these witnesses provided FBI with video evidence capturing an exchange between Ayala and his companions before he approached the broken windows. In the video, one of the witnesses asks Ayala if they should run if they hear gunfire, to which Ayala responds by inquiring about the direction they should go.

As of now, more than 1,200 individuals have been charged in connection with the January 6th Capitol attack, with close to 900 convicted on charges ranging from unlawful parading to seditious conspiracy. The FBI has identified hundreds of additional rioters who have yet to be arrested, indicating that numerous cases are still pending.
