SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a tragic incident, two elderly individuals were discovered dead inside a scorching hot house in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Concerned family members had alerted the authorities, prompting a welfare check at the residence. Upon entering the home, the police and EMS found the lifeless bodies of 84-year-old Joan Littlejohn and 82-year-old Glennwood Fowler.

Reports indicate that the temperature inside the house exceeded a scorching 120 degrees. According to the victims’ family, they had been attempting to fix a pilot light on the hot water heater. After finding both the heater and hot water heater non-functional, and the house becoming too cold, they managed to reignite the pilot light and left the premises.

While carbon monoxide was initially absent in the house, Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger is now testing the bodies of the deceased for potential carbon monoxide poisoning. Clevenger emphasized the importance of considering carbon monoxide as a factor in such cases, especially given the nature of the heater involved.

To gain more insights into the cause of this tragedy, Clevenger has enlisted the expertise of a specialist to thoroughly examine the furnace. The specialist’s evaluation will shed light on whether any malfunction or issue with the heater led to the extreme heat observed in the house.

Determining the exact cause of death may take several weeks, as investigators strive to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident. In the meantime, this devastating incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with malfunctioning heating systems and the importance of regular maintenance and safety precautions to prevent such tragic outcomes.
