OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – Gunfire erupted near businesses on Prospect Road in Oakland Park on Wednesday, resulting in a confrontation between Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and a non-compliant suspect.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, its deputies were forced to open fire on a man who refused to comply with their commands. The incident occurred on the 800 block of Prospect Road. Tim Miller, who works nearby, witnessed the events and shared his account with Local 10 News.

Miller stated that he noticed the suspect sitting in his car when he arrived at work in the morning. He did not pay much attention to him until the police informed him about their presence later in the day. The deputies, part of the Crime Suppression Team in the Oakland Park district, had located a domestic violence suspect named Alexander Staal.

Staal was wanted for multiple felony domestic violence charges related to a recent incident. The charges included attempted kidnapping, burglary of a dwelling with battery, aggravated stalking after injunction for protection, and domestic battery. The incident had taken place in Oakland Park on Sunday.

In a cell phone video obtained by authorities, the deputies can be heard shouting commands to Staal, asking him to surrender. After a prolonged period of negotiation, Staal finally exited his vehicle but failed to comply with further instructions, raising his arm and appearing to be holding something.

This action prompted the deputies to open fire, resulting in Staal being shot multiple times. The video footage captures the intense moment and the surprise expressed by witnesses.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office has placed the deputies involved in the shooting on administrative duty while an investigation into the incident is conducted.

The use of firearms by law enforcement officers is always a matter of scrutiny, and this incident will be thoroughly reviewed to determine if the actions of the deputies were justified.
