The man who was shot and killed by Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies on Wednesday afternoon in Oakland Park after a standoff has been identified as 51-year-old Alexander Staal. Staal was wanted for multiple felony charges including attempted kidnapping, burglary, aggravated stalking, and domestic battery.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, detectives from the Oakland Park District Crime Suppression Team found Staal inside his car parked in the 800 block of East Prospect Road around 2:30 p.m. When deputies tried to get him to surrender, Staal refused to comply, leading to a confrontation. Deputies were forced to fire their weapons, resulting in Staal’s death.

Fortunately, none of the three deputies involved in the incident were injured. They have been placed on administrative assignment while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts an investigation. Aerial footage from various television news stations showed a dark-colored SUV with bullet holes through the windshield. The Sheriff’s Office spokesperson stated that the confrontation took place outside of the car, although further details were not provided.
Staal had a history of domestic violence, with three previous cases in Broward County since early 2023. He also had one stalking-related case on record. The Sheriff’s Office has not released additional information about the domestic incident that occurred on Sunday.
