Two people were found dead in an “extremely hot” house in Spartanburg, South Carolina, according to police. The victims, 84-year-old Joan Littlejohn and 82-year-old Glennwood Fowler, were discovered after family members called for a welfare check. When officers and EMS personnel entered the home, they found temperatures exceeding 120 degrees. Firefighters later determined that the furnace in the basement was “extremely” hot, reaching temperatures of 800 to 1,000 degrees. Carbon monoxide levels were tested, but no unusual levels were found.
The victims’ family informed the police that they had been attempting to fix a pilot light on the home’s hot water heater. Both the heater and hot water heater had been out, causing the residence to become too cold. Once the pilot light was relit, the family left the house. While carbon monoxide was not initially detected, the Spartanburg County Coroner, Rusty Clevenger, is testing to see if it is found in the victims’ bodies. Clevenger has also hired a specialist to inspect the furnace in order to determine if any malfunctions or issues caused the excessive heat in the house. However, it may take several weeks to determine the exact cause of death for the victims.
