Smithtown Community Comes Together for Annual Menorah Lighting
Close to 100 people from the Smithtown community joined together on Wednesday evening for the annual menorah lighting ceremony. The event, held at a local park, was organized by Supervisor Ed Wehrheim and received support from various government officials and organizations.
The festive gathering was a symbol of unity and celebration as the Jewish community marked the beginning of Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights. The menorah lighting ceremony is a significant tradition during this holiday, representing the miracle of a small amount of oil that lasted for eight days in the ancient Jewish temple.
Supervisor Ed Wehrheim expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the event. “It is heartwarming to see our community come together and celebrate the rich traditions and diversity that make Smithtown such a special place,” said Wehrheim. “I am thankful to all the individuals and organizations who played a part in making this event a memorable one.”
The Smithtown Fire Department, Smithtown Superintendent Mark Secaur, and the Suffolk County Police Department’s 4th Precinct, represented by Dave Regina, were among those recognized for their support. Their efforts ensured the event was safe, well-organized, and enjoyed by all attendees.
Mark Secaur, the Smithtown Superintendent, emphasized the importance of community events like the menorah lighting in fostering unity and understanding. “Events like these allow us to come together as a community, learn about different cultures and traditions, and build bridges of friendship and respect,” said Secaur. “It is wonderful to see our community embrace diversity and celebrate together.”
The menorah lighting ceremony was filled with joy and excitement. Attendees sang traditional Hanukkah songs, listened to inspiring speeches, and witnessed the lighting of the menorah. The menorah, an eight-branched candelabrum, was lit to commemorate the first night of Hanukkah. Each subsequent night, an additional candle will be kindled until all eight candles are illuminated.
