Tragic Road Accident in Chumphon: One Dead and Six Injured as Pickup Truck Flips to Avoid Motorbike

In a tragic incident in Chumphon province, a pickup truck carrying six workers was involved in a severe accident that resulted in one fatality and six injuries. The accident occurred yesterday around 5pm when the truck swerved abruptly to avoid a motorbike coming from the opposite direction.

The pickup truck, a Toyota model with Bangkok license plate number TCJ 8112, veered off the Asian Highway 41 at the intersection of Ban Khuan-Na Phya Road and ended up in a water-filled ditch. The impact of the crash caused the vehicle to flip, leading to significant damage. The front bumper was detached, the roof above the driver’s seat was crushed, and the windscreen shattered. Additionally, the stainless-steel fence of the truck bed was also damaged.

Upon arriving at the scene, Manoch Plodkankan, an investigative officer from the Lang Suan Police Station, found the seven occupants of the truck scattered across the road, crying out in pain. Immediate first aid was provided to all injured individuals. Unfortunately, despite receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a woman identified as 54-year-old Sawas Promjinda succumbed to her injuries upon reaching Lang Suan Hospital. The remaining six workers sustained minor injuries such as broken arms, dislocated shoulders, and various bruises.

According to the injured workers, they were returning home after collecting fallen palm fruits from a garden. The driver, 43-year-old Somphon Mitphan, had loaded the truck almost to full capacity with the fruits. As it was getting late, Somphon decided to drive back home, but tragedy struck during the return journey. While attempting to overtake a car, he had to swerve violently to avoid a motorbike, causing the truck to lose balance and flip.

The case is currently under investigation, and further questioning of the injured workers will provide additional details to determine any charges against Somphon. This unfortunate accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of careful driving to ensure the safety of all road users. The incident has brought attention to the need for increased awareness and adherence to traffic rules and regulations.
