Tragic Plane Crash in Alaska Claims Life of Pilot Kurt Stjean: Latest Updates

Dec. 11—One person has died and another is in critical condition following the crash of a Piper PA-18 Super Cub on Friday afternoon just north of Anchor Point along the Sterling Highway, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The pilot of the aircraft, identified as Kurt Stjean, 52, was found dead at the crash site, as reported by troopers in an online statement. The only other person on board, a woman, was transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries. Troopers spokesman Justin Freeman confirmed via email that the passenger remains in critical condition as of Saturday evening.

At approximately 1:12 p.m. on Friday, troopers received notification of an airplane crash near Mile 155 of the Sterling Highway. Shortly after, they discovered the crashed Super Cub in the trees near Mile 154.5.

Online records from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) indicate that the registered owner of the aircraft is Homer resident Kurt Joseph St. Jean. The investigation will focus on determining the departure and destination locations of the plane, according to Freeman.

Troopers have already informed the next of kin, and an ongoing investigation is underway. Clint Johnson, head of the National Transportation Safety Board’s Alaska Regional Office, stated on Saturday morning that two NTSB investigators were dispatched to the scene to conduct an on-site investigation of the accident.
