San Diego, CA – A devastating police pursuit crash on Friday has left the community grieving as two young brothers, 8-year-old Malikai Orozco-Romero and his 4-year-old brother, Mason, tragically lost their lives. The children, accompanied by their mother and aunt, were on their way to the store when the fatal accident occurred.

The boys’ godmother, Brittany Phommavong, has set up a GoFundMe page to support the grieving family during this difficult time. The page includes a heartwrenching photo of the two innocent boys.
The crash took place near the 43rd Street exit along the southbound lanes of the 805 freeway at approximately 6:30 p.m. The police pursuit involved a BMW that collided with the Honda carrying the children and their family. According to Phommavong, the family was en route to the grocery store to purchase snacks.
As a result of the collision, both vehicles veered off the road and down an embankment. The Honda crashed into a tree, causing it to topple onto the car and ignite into flames.
The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Angel Daniel Salgado Velasquez, fled the scene on foot. However, law enforcement apprehended him shortly after. Velasquez is currently facing charges including Hit and Run: Death/Injury, Evading Police, and Great Bodily Injury. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the victims were swiftly transported to the hospital for urgent medical care. The boys’ mother, who already battled health issues, is currently in critical condition. Tragically, the boys’ father, who resided out of state, passed away in December 2022.
