Three people have died in a tragic wrong-way crash on a Florida bridge that involved a rideshare driver and a stolen vehicle. The incident occurred on the night of December 6 on the Skyway Bridge in St. Petersburg, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Authorities responded to a report from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office regarding a stolen Ford Mustang. Deputies had attempted to stop the vehicle but were unsuccessful. The driver, identified as 22-year-old Leosvany Roman, crashed into two HCSO vehicles before fleeing the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.
During a chase with law enforcement, Roman collided with a Florida Highway Patrol trooper’s vehicle. He then turned around, intentionally rammed the trooper’s vehicle again, and fled the scene. Tragically, Roman’s reckless actions led to a head-on collision with a Dodge Caravan, resulting in the deaths of the Uber driver and one of the three passengers. Another passenger later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed his outrage at the incident, stating, “This criminal had no regard for human life. Our deputies had to face danger and jump out of the way to avoid being run over by a man who was desperate to escape. The additional charges he faces will ensure he spends a significant amount of time behind bars.”
