Suspect Arrested in Slaying of Texas High School Cheerleader
Authorities in Texas have arrested a suspect in the slaying of 16-year-old high school cheerleader Lizbeth Medina. The victim’s body was discovered in the bathtub of her home by her mother on Tuesday. The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Rafael Govea Romero, was taken into custody on Saturday and is facing charges of capital murder.

According to Edna Police Chief Rick Boone, Romero was arrested in Schulenburg, about 75 miles north of Edna, by the Texas Rangers and Edna police. He was subsequently transferred to the Jackson County Jail. Further details about the arrest have not been disclosed at this time.
Medina was scheduled to perform with her cheerleading squad at a Christmas parade in Edna on the day she was killed. When she failed to show up, her mother began searching for her and tragically found her unresponsive in their apartment.
Romero’s arrest came just a day after the Edna Police Department released security photos of a person and vehicle of interest in connection with Medina’s homicide. The community had been holding a candlelight vigil for the victim at the time of Romero’s capture.
The police have not revealed any information about a possible prior relationship between Medina and Romero, nor have they confirmed whether the attack was a random incident. Additionally, few details about the circumstances of Medina’s death have been made available, and an autopsy report is pending release.

The Medina family moved to Edna last year, and Lizbeth was highly regarded by her peers and teachers. Her cheerleading squad and family paid tribute to her by wearing her favorite color, purple, at a recent football game.
Jacqueline Medina, the victim’s mother, expressed her grief and desire for justice. She described her daughter as having a kind heart and being willing to help others.
The arrest of Romero brings some relief to the community, but support is still needed for the grieving family. Chief Boone assured the citizens of Edna that they can now sleep in peace. The investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing.
