St. Petersburg Man Arrested for Threatening NYC Subway Shooting on Thanksgiving: Robert Trout III Faces Federal Charges

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A man from St. Petersburg has been arrested for making threats against the New York City subway system on Thanksgiving, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Robert Trout III, 19, is facing charges of knowingly transmitting a true threat in interstate commerce. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to five years in federal prison.

In a video that Trout posted on Instagram, he threatened to go to New York City and cause chaos on the subway by shooting anyone he saw, the DOJ reported. He specifically mentioned that the shooting would take place on Thanksgiving evening.

Trout displayed multiple firearms, including two semi-automatic guns with extended clips containing a total of 60 bullets, during the video. He chillingly commented, “That’s 60 shots; 60 people dead,” according to the DOJ.

Trout was identified as the individual responsible for the threats through other recent posts on his Instagram account and statements from witnesses. On December 7, he appeared before a federal court in Tampa, where a judge ordered that he remain detained until further court proceedings.

The seriousness of Trout’s threats against the New York City subway system cannot be understated. The potential for harm and loss of life was significant, and law enforcement agencies took immediate action to ensure the safety of the public.
