Son Arrested for Killing Mother and Sister, Burying Them in Backyard: Enugu Police Confirms

The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a young man accused of killing his mother and sister and burying them in a shallow grave in their backyard. The suspect, identified as Somadina Orji, allegedly committed the crime on December 4, 2023, in Umuagu Inyi, Enugu State.

Reports suggest that the late Charity Orji, a native of Inyi who was married in Igboariam, had been living with her children in her family house for several years. However, her son, who was reportedly involved in the illegal drug trade, had ongoing conflicts with her over his behavior.

According to community leader Mr. Ben Obi, the problems escalated when the suspect had an altercation with his younger brother. The mother intervened and sought help from the community to remove him from the house. Tragically, the younger sister had already been missing for two weeks before the confrontation occurred.

On the day of the incident, the mother returned from a condolence visit and was later killed and buried by her son in the backyard. When the younger brother realized their mother was missing, he raised the alarm, leading to the discovery of the gruesome crime.

The police were called, and the remains of the mother and sister were exhumed and taken to the mortuary. The suspect was arrested and is currently under investigation. Meanwhile, community leaders have expressed their concerns about the high prevalence of drug abuse in the area, emphasizing the need for intervention from the government and anti-drug agencies.

DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that the investigation is ongoing. Once completed, the suspect will be prosecuted in court.
