Shane James Jr. Accused of Killing Six People in San Antonio and Austin Shooting Spree

Shane James Jr. is facing new charges in connection with a shooting spree that took place in San Antonio and Austin, Texas. The accused is alleged to have killed two people in San Antonio and four people in Austin on December 5. Previously facing two capital murder charges, James now faces four capital murder charges and two charges for felony Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant. The additional charges are related to allegedly injuring officers from the Austin ISD Police Department and the Austin Police Department. While details of another first-degree felony charge have not been made available, James is currently being held without bond in the Travis County Jail.

The shooting spree began in the San Antonio area, where James is accused of killing his parents, Phyllis James and Shane James Sr., in a home east of the city. The scene was described as “grisly” by Sheriff Javier Salazar. James then moved on to Austin, where he allegedly killed Emmanuel Pop Ba, Sabrina Rahman, Katherine Short, and Lauren Short. The shooting incidents in Austin also resulted in the injury of an Austin ISD Police Department officer.

The first contact the police had with James occurred when they responded to a burglary in progress call in southwest Austin’s Circle C neighborhood. Surveillance video showed James attempting to break into a residence. When officers arrived at the scene, James began shooting at them. In the ensuing pursuit, James fled in a stolen car. Meanwhile, officers entered the residence and discovered two women, Katherine Short and Lauren Short, with gunshot wounds. Despite attempts to save their lives, both women died at the scene.

The pursuit ended when James crashed his car near State Highway 45 and FM 1826. He was taken into custody by the police, and a gun was found in his possession.

James is scheduled to appear in court on January 18, 2024. The investigation into the shooting spree is ongoing, and authorities continue to gather evidence and information related to the case.
