Palatine Resident and Wauconda High School Teacher Killed in Wrong-Way Crash: Remembering Robert E. Gillen

Palatine resident and Wauconda High School teacher, Robert E. Gillen, 53, tragically lost his life in a wrong-way crash in Wheeling on Sunday, December 10. The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. when an intoxicated driver was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Palatine Road near Wheeling Road. Gillen’s vehicle was struck head-on by the wrong-way driver. Wheeling police reported that there were two occupants in each vehicle, with one other person sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Gillen’s identity. The Northwest Suburban Major Case Assistance Team Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) unit was called to the scene, and the road remained closed for approximately nine hours.

Gillen had been a math teacher at Wauconda High School and was an integral part of the Wauconda Community Unit School District 118. Colleagues, students, and community members are deeply saddened by his unexpected passing. The district released a statement expressing their grief and offering support to those affected by the loss. Gillen had been a dedicated educator, athletic trainer, and colleague since 1996. He was known for his commitment to his students’ education, the care of athletes, and the growth of his colleagues. His positive impact on the school community will be deeply missed.

The wrong-way driver, who caused the fatal crash, remains hospitalized, and charges have yet to be filed. Wheeling police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
