Milwaukee Man Faces Homicide Charge After Striking Pedestrian with Vehicle

A Milwaukee man, Richard Heimann, is currently facing a felony charge of homicide after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with his vehicle in St. Francis back in June. If convicted of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, Heimann could face up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

The incident occurred on June 13, as reported by the St. Francis Police Department. The victim, identified as Gerard Jaszewski, 67, was hit while jogging on Kinnickinnic Avenue. The police department stated that Heimann cooperated with the officers on the scene.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, St. Francis police responded to the scene and found a silver Honda minivan with front-end damage. They also discovered Jaszewski lying on the curb. Heimann, who was near the van, admitted to being the driver and claimed that he looked down to turn on his phone, leading to the accident. He acknowledged that it was his fault and stated that he didn’t see the pedestrian until he hit them.

Field sobriety tests were conducted by the officer, which Heimann performed adequately. However, a blood draw taken at St. Luke’s South Shore Hospital revealed the presence of methamphetamines, amphetamines, and gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) in his system.

A witness informed the police that they saw the van strike Jaszewski. The investigation indicated that the van had drifted into the right shoulder of South Kinnickinnic Avenue, where Jaszewski was jogging, and struck him. Surveillance footage captured the incident, showing Heimann parking the van in a nearby bank parking lot, running to Jaszewski, and then returning to the minivan.

Jaszewski was taken to Froedtert Hospital where he received treatment for several days. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on June 20, having suffered from traumatic brain injury, head injuries, and fractures.

The case against Heimann will proceed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court. For further information, contact Erik S. Hanley at erik.hanley@jrn.com or visit his Facebook page “The Redheadliner” and follow him on Twitter @Redheadliner.
