Monterey Police Investigate Alleged Hate Crime in California

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. – Police in Monterey are currently investigating an alleged hate crime that took place during the first week of December, according to an announcement made by the department on Friday.

The incident involved a man who reported being in his vehicle on Pine Street in the 300 block when an individual approached him and began scratching something onto the side of his car. The suspect fled as soon as he realized there was someone inside the vehicle, as reported by the police.

Law enforcement initiated an investigation, and eventually, a person matching the suspect’s description drove up to the neighboring property of the victim. Identified as 46-year-old Mikhail Faybyshev from Monterey, the suspect was apprehended.

The police claim to possess video evidence of Faybyshev committing the crime. Furthermore, they allege that Faybyshev confessed to scratching words onto the victim’s car because of their religious affiliation as a Muslim.

Faybyshev has been arrested and is facing charges of vandalism and a hate crime.

The Monterey Police Department is collaborating with the FBI on this case and has contacted local Muslim leaders to inform them of the incident, offer support, and urge them to report any concerning matters to the authorities.

According to the police, this year, the city of Monterey has witnessed four reported hate crime cases, with two based on race and two based on religion.
