Investigation Reveals Man Shoots Guest at Wedding Reception in Virginia

Frederick County, Virginia – A 22-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly shooting a guest at a wedding reception in Frederick County on Saturday. The suspect, identified as John Morningstar, was a groomsman at the wedding and had been asked to leave the event due to excessive intoxication.

The incident unfolded at around 7:08 p.m. when the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a man threatening to shoot guests at the wedding reception. As law enforcement responded to the Historic Jordan Springs venue, the call was updated to possible shots fired. Limited information was initially available, only including a description of the suspect’s vehicle.

The first deputy on the scene noticed a car leaving and alerted other units about the suspect vehicle. Meanwhile, at the venue, police discovered a man who had been shot in the leg and immediately provided first-aid until emergency medical services arrived.

Shortly after, the suspect’s vehicle was spotted driving recklessly on Jordan Springs Road. Law enforcement conducted a traffic stop at Jordan Springs Market and detained the driver, identified as John Morningstar, without any further incident.

Further investigation revealed that Morningstar, who had been asked to leave the wedding due to intoxication, had made threats to return and shoot everyone present. Witnesses reported that Morningstar was seen driving recklessly and engaging in a fight with another attendee, 34-year-old Kevin Huff. The altercation resulted in Huff being shot in the leg before Morningstar fled the scene.

During the traffic stop, Morningstar was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound on his foot. Emergency medical services responded to assess and treat his injuries. Authorities also discovered multiple firearms and various ammunition inside Morningstar’s vehicle, including the suspected weapon used in the shooting.

Morningstar will be initially charged with DUI, Malicious Wounding, and two counts of Reckless Handling of a Firearm. Both Morningstar and Huff were transported to Winchester Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries and are currently in stable condition.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
