Groomsman Fires Shots at Wedding Reception, Injures Victim: Frederick County News

Frederick County, VA – A person was injured during a wedding reception in Frederick County when a groomsman fired shots on Saturday evening, according to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FSCO). The incident occurred at the Historic Jordan Springs venue after the individual was asked to leave for being intoxicated.

The FSCO received a 911 call around 7:00 pm regarding a person making threats to shoot guests. As deputies were en route, the situation escalated and shots were reportedly fired. Upon arrival, the first deputy noticed a vehicle leaving the scene and informed other deputies. Subsequently, two deputies discovered a 34-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg. The injured individual was identified as Kevin Huff.

Meanwhile, another deputy witnessed the suspect driving erratically on Jordan Springs Road and conducted a traffic stop. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old John Morningstar, was detained without any resistance. During the stop, deputies noticed that Morningstar had sustained a gunshot wound to the foot, which they believe to be self-inflicted.

Both Huff and Morningstar were transported to Winchester Medical Center for treatment of their non-life-threatening injuries. Further investigation revealed that Morningstar had multiple firearms and ammunition in his vehicle, including the weapon used against Huff.

Morningstar is now facing charges of DUI, Malicious Wounding, and two counts of Reckless Handling of a Firearm.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a safe and secure environment during social gatherings. The FSCO is urging individuals to be cautious and report any suspicious activity to local authorities. The investigation into the motive behind the shooting is still ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.
