In 2024, the world is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, with nearly 300 million people in need of assistance and protection. This is due to various factors, including conflicts, climate emergencies, and economic challenges. The situation is particularly dire in East and Southern Africa, where 74.1 million people require humanitarian assistance. The crisis in Sudan alone accounts for almost 40 percent of this total, with the number of people in need increasing from 15.8 million in 2023 to a staggering 30 million in 2024.

Other regions also face significant challenges. In West and Central Africa, 65.1 million people are in need, with the crises in Burkina Faso and Niger intensifying. Asia and the Pacific have 50.8 million people in need, with Afghanistan and Myanmar being major contributors. Latin America and the Caribbean are home to 38.9 million people in need, with Venezuela being a significant driver. In Eastern Europe, 16.8 million people still require assistance because of the war in Ukraine.
There are three main drivers behind these increasing needs. Firstly, conflicts around the world are becoming more entrenched, leading to devastating consequences for civilians. Secondly, the global climate emergency is causing widespread destruction, with climate disasters on the rise. Lastly, economic factors are overlapping with other crises, exacerbating humanitarian needs in several countries.
The impact of these crises is staggering. More people are displaced now than at any other time since the start of the century, with over 1 in 73 people forcibly displaced. The number of refugees is at a record high of 36.4 million, with acute food insecurity affecting 258 million people in 58 countries. Disease outbreaks, such as cholera, are causing significant loss of life.
To address these urgent needs, the UN and partner organizations have launched a global appeal for $46.4 billion in 2024. This funding will assist 180.5 million people across 72 countries. The largest portion of the appeal, $13.9 billion, is allocated for the Middle East and North Africa. East and Southern Africa require $10.9 billion, while West and Central Africa need $8.3 billion. Asia and the Pacific, Eastern Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean also require significant funding.
