Curtis Davis and Tonya Bishop Arrested for Capitol Breach: North Carolina Couple Faces Felony and Misdemeanor Charges

WASHINGTON – A couple from North Carolina has been arrested on serious charges related to their actions during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The incident disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress that was being held to count the electoral votes for the 2020 presidential election.

Curtis Davis, 45, and Tonya Bishop, 48, of Snow Hill, North Carolina, face felony charges of civil disorder and assaulting certain officers, as well as several misdemeanor charges. These include entering a restricted area, engaging in physical violence, disorderly conduct, and demonstrating inside the Capitol building.

The couple was arrested on Dec. 8, 2023, in Snow Hill and will appear in court today in the Eastern District of North Carolina.

According to court documents, Davis and Bishop were identified through video footage as being inside the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021. Davis can be seen wearing a black beanie-style hat with a U.S. flag containing a thin blue line, sunglasses, a gray and tan coat, and a blue/gray shirt depicting a skull. Bishop is seen wearing light-colored gloves, a blue sweatshirt with stars and stripes, and a black jacket with pink writing on the back.

Surveillance footage from inside the Capitol shows Davis and Bishop joining the conflict between rioters and law enforcement. Davis can be seen shoving and punching officers, while Bishop pushes and resists their attempts to disperse the crowd.

Additional footage shows Davis fighting with law enforcement officers and seizing an officer’s baton, while Bishop places her hands on and pushes officers.

The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice’s Counterterrorism Section. The FBI’s Charlotte and Washington Field Offices are leading the investigation, with assistance from the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.

Since Jan. 6, 2021, over 1,230 individuals have been charged in connection with the breach of the U.S. Capitol. This includes more than 440 individuals charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation is ongoing.
