Boy from Sullivan Killed in Steuben Crash

STEUBEN, Maine — Cole Merchant, a 17-year-old boy from Sullivan, was tragically killed in a crash on Sunday in Steuben, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety. The accident occurred when the vehicle Merchant was riding in collided with a large tree on the passenger side.

The driver of the vehicle, 18-year-old Chase Atwater of Steuben, was traveling south on Unionville Road in Steuben when the vehicle went airborne while driving over a hill. This caused Atwater to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in the fatal crash.

Maine State Police responded to the scene of the crash and found Merchant deceased. Atwater sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities believe that speed was a contributing factor in the accident, but the investigation is still ongoing.

The news of Merchant’s death has deeply affected the community, particularly Sumner Memorial High School, where he was a senior student. The school’s principal, Jackson Green, expressed his condolences and stated that mental health resources and counseling services would be available to students and staff.

A candlelight vigil has been organized in honor of Merchant and will take place on Sunday, December 17, at the Sumner Memorial Park gazebo. Additionally, a GoFundMe page has been set up to support Merchant’s family during this difficult time.
