Golaghat (Assam) [India], December 11 (ANI): A notorious thief involved in multiple theft cases met his demise during a police encounter in Golaghat district of Assam. The accused, identified as Dilip Sahani alias Lagan Sahani, was apprehended by the Dergaon police on Saturday along with several stolen items.
According to Golaghat Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajen Singh, Sahani was leading the police team to a location where he had hidden the stolen articles. However, he suddenly pulled out a pistol from the stolen loot and fired at the police team in an attempt to escape. In self-defense, the police retaliated and Sahani was fatally injured.

The police team found an Italian-made 7.65 mm pistol and two empty cases of 7.65mm live ammunition in Sahani’s possession. The accused had been involved in numerous theft cases over the past few years and had instilled fear in the local community.
“We used our sources and apprehended him with the help of the local public,” said SP Singh. The encounter took place near the Basic Training Centre, an abandoned location, where Sahani was supposed to reveal the stolen properties.
After the firing ceased, the area was thoroughly searched and Sahani was discovered with bullet injuries. He was rushed to Dergaon Community Health Centre, where doctors pronounced him dead. The investigation is ongoing, with the police working to recover all the stolen articles.
This encounter serves as a significant achievement for the Golaghat police in their efforts to combat crime in the area. The successful operation was made possible through the cooperation of the local community and the diligent work of the police force.
