24-Year-Old Guillermo Velazquez Arrested After High-Speed Chase and Collision with Utah Highway Patrol Vehicle

OGDEN – A 24-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning after allegedly driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph and attempting to evade the authorities, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The probable cause statement reveals that a UHP trooper detected a black Chevrolet Impala traveling at 101 mph in a 70 mph speed zone at around 1:30 a.m. The trooper initiated a stop, but the driver, identified as Guillermo Velazquez, chose to flee in an effort to escape police.

The suspect vehicle continued for several miles, exiting and re-entering the highway on the ramp, before colliding with the UHP vehicle. This collision took place on the northbound ramp to Interstate 15 at 31st Street in Ogden, causing injuries to the occupants of the Impala as well as the UHP trooper.

After the crash, the driver of the Impala fled the scene, driving in the opposite direction until the vehicle was unable to continue. Local officers apprehended all four occupants of the vehicle upon its stop. Velazquez, the driver, was found to be highly intoxicated and not wearing a seatbelt.

Authorities also discovered an open container of alcohol in the vehicle, which emitted a strong odor of marijuana.

Velazquez was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. Following his recovery, he was booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of failure to comply with an officer’s signal, driving under the influence, and having an open container in a vehicle on a highway.

The UHP trooper, who also sustained injuries in the collision, was transported to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, he was released shortly after and is expected to make a full recovery.
