According to students from East Carolina University, where Polito previously taught, he would often remind them to leave positive reviews on ratemyprofessors.com. He also had a distinctive style, teaching in a suit and cufflinks and smoking an e-cigarette in front of students. But what stood out the most was Polito’s deep love for Las Vegas.

During his classes, Polito would always have a Las Vegas-themed backdrop on his computer screen and would talk about his upcoming trips to luxury hotels and the delicious steak he planned to order. Some students even recall entire classes dedicated to his weekend excursions in Las Vegas.

However, Polito struggled to transition from being a tourist to a permanent resident of Las Vegas. After moving to the city, he had difficulty finding a job and was at risk of losing his home. This may have contributed to the tragic events that unfolded on Wednesday.

Polito entered the campus of UNLV with a 9mm handgun and fatally shot three faculty members. Law enforcement revealed that he had maintained a list of targets from both UNLV and East Carolina University staff.

Former students of Polito were shocked to see their professor’s face on national news, linked to a mass shooting. They remembered him as a passionate and approachable professor, making it even more difficult to believe the tragedy.

Polito left East Carolina University in 2017 and moved to Las Vegas, fulfilling his dream of living in the city he spoke so passionately about. However, his neighbors described him as isolated and aloof, and he struggled to find employment.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated that Polito had applied for jobs with Nevada schools multiple times and had been rejected each time. Former students speculate that this repeated rejection may have contributed to his desperation and anger.

As law enforcement continues to investigate the motive behind the shooting, former students are left grappling with the shocking realization that their beloved professor became a gunman targeting the very city he idolized.
