The suspected gunman who was arrested for a series of shootings from San Antonio to Austin attempted to escape from the Travis County Jail, according to court records. Shane James Jr., 34, was charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of six people, including his parents, and the injury of three others. Kristen Dark, a spokesperson for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, stated that James pushed past a corrections officer and ran into the hallway before being detained. Dark assured the public that the jail is a secure facility, and James would not have been able to escape the floor he was on or the building itself.
Austin police have linked James to a series of violent events that began in San Antonio and ended in Austin. An arrest affidavit revealed that police were alerted to a burglary in the Circle C neighborhood of Southwest Austin. The homeowner reported seeing a man trying to break into his house on his live surveillance system, with his wife and daughter inside. When the police arrived, they found James in the home. He attempted to flee through the backyard and shot and injured a police officer before running into the garage. James then stole the family’s vehicle and led the police on a high-speed chase. He eventually crashed into another car and was arrested. Court documents revealed that a gun and bullets were found in the stolen vehicle.

During the investigation, officers discovered two people with gunshot wounds in the Southwest Austin home. They were identified as Katherine Short, 56, and her daughter, Lauren Short, 30, who both died at the scene. Authorities believe that James also killed his parents in their San Antonio home before making his way to Austin. He is also suspected of shooting an Austin Independent School District officer near Northeast Early College High School and killing Emmanuel Pop Ba and Sabrina Rahman in a South Austin neighborhood.
As of Friday, James remains in the Travis County Jail. The investigation into the shootings is ongoing.
