EDNA, Texas – Rafael Govea Romero has been arrested and charged with the capital murder of 16-year-old cheerleader Lizbeth Medina from Edna, Texas. The arrest comes four days after Medina’s mother found her dead in their apartment.
Medina, a cheerleader at her local high school, was discovered in a bathtub after she failed to show up at a Christmas parade where she was supposed to perform. Her mother went home to look for her and made the tragic discovery.

On Sunday morning, the Edna Police Department announced Romero’s arrest. He was located in the city of Schulenburg and was immediately taken into custody for capital murder. The 23-year-old suspect, who was born in Mexico according to Texas DPS records, has been transported to the Jackson County Jail.
Further details about Romero and the circumstances of the killing have not been released. However, the investigation involved several agencies, including the Edna Police Department, Texas Rangers, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and Texas DPS.
Medina’s mother, Jacqueline Medina, spoke to reporters and described her daughter as someone who loved everybody and cared for everyone. The Edna Police Department, with assistance from the Texas Rangers, is treating the case as a capital murder but has not provided specific information about the girl’s manner of death. On Friday, police released images of a man and a vehicle potentially connected to the crime, appealing to the public for any information. The man is described as possibly having a tattoo behind his right ear and was seen wearing a black “Volcom” hooded sweatshirt while driving a silver Ford Taurus.
